It is unfortunate that our patients have to experience dyslexia and vision therapy at the same time. However, we are here to provide the proper treatments in order to remedy the vision impairments and learning disabilities that come with dyslexia. Here is some advice that we share with our prospective and current patients.
What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a disorder that is defined by having difficulties with learning and/or interpreting numbers, symbols, letters, words and numbers. This is a very common disorder that has affected over 3 million children and adults every single year.
Signs of dyslexia
Dyslexia is a disorder that cannot be changed through any physical or aesthetic changes. However, there are signs in regards to their mental state and comprehension skills. It is important to pay close attention to the signs of possible dyslexia including cognitive, speech impairment moments, and developmental issues.
Cognitive symptoms include having difficulty with spelling, thinking and understanding, and/or memorizing anything. The developmental signs that you can pay attention to include other learning disabilities or a speech delay (usually common in kids).
For example, the brain alters what the eyes see when individuals have dyslexia. This is why when you hear or have noticed anyone with dyslexia seeing things out of order, it is because dyslexia is caused due to the brain’s processing capabilities having a defect.
How can vision therapy help someone ability to learn with dyslexia?
Vision therapy can help someone with dyslexia learn how to adapt appropriately to their current situation. With proper exercises, education, and non-surgical treatment, we are able to provide patients with solutions to their problems. Vision therapy is linked to assisting with learning and reading disabilities. Since the two are similar and connected in some ways, vision therapy acts as the extra tutor that a patient needs with dyslexia and vision problems.
